Many modern surveillance systems are making the switch from old analog NTSC type to new IP network based video cameras. These new cameras digitize and compress video data that is then streamed real-time over a standard Ethernet network. The advantages of this approach are numerous. They include easier recording and storage of video on hard disk drives and CD ROMS as opposed to videocassette tapes.

Some cameras include a motion detection function that can be used to activate an output when motion is detected. While this is sufficient for rarely visited remote locations, often, other functions are required. These include counting people entering or leaving an area, or identifying objects left behind such as backpacks or briefcases that could potentially be a bomb. Other functions include image stabilization for panning/zoomed cameras, or facial recognition.

The Valde Systems VS1701 smart camera can be used in many of these applications. Its open software architecture allows it to be easily customized for different applications. Its low power allows it to be powered by power over ethernet technology, thereby eliminating the requirements for a dedicated electrical outlet.
