Valde Systems VS1501R
The Valde Systems VS1501R is a ruggedized version of the VS1501. It is designed for harsh environments often encountered in applications such as industrial automation and autonomous vehicles. These environments expose the processor to tempatrue extremes, shock and vibration along with corrosive liquids. The enclosure of the VS1501R is designed to operate under these conditions, filling the need for a local embedded, high performance, small size, low power image processor.
The VS1501R still mantains all the features of the VS1501 including a DSP processor with 5760 MIPS of performance. Other features include two independent, full-rate (not shared bandwidth) IEEE-1394 Firewire interfaces which make the VS1501R well suited for stereo-vision applications as well as single-camera setups. The VS1501R fits in tight spaces, and has heat sinks built right into the enclosure for direct thermal coupling to the mounting surface.
Other features include two inputs and two outputs of I/O, a dual-speed 10/100 Ethernet port, an RS-232 serial port with hardware and software flow control, and a NTSC/PAL composite video output.
What differentiates the VS1501R from the regular VS1501, and makes it ideal for industrial robotics and autonomous vehicles is the built in powerful ARM 9 processor dedicated to support of the following interfaces:
- 6 CAN bus interfaces
- 8 LIN bus interfaces
- 1 FlexRay interface
- 2 Additional RS-232 serial ports
These interfaces include support for many widely used protocols and standards. This makes connecting the VS1501R to a motion control system very straightforward. By integrating the motion control interfaces directly into the image processor, indeterminism and latency between the vision and motion system are almost elimated, which is required for high performance visual servoing applications such as bin picking in industrial robotics, or manulipator control for tele-operated and autonomous robots.
The VS1501R is not just attractive from a feature and performance point of view, but also from a price perspective as well. In high volume applications such as lane departure warning or pedestrian detection, the VS1501R can be priced competively with similar ruggedized PC solutions.
